Student Activities in Mathematics

Pi Mu Epsilon:

Pi Mu Epsilon is a national honorary society that recognizes outstanding achievement in mathematics and is open to qualified students regardless of major. The chapter at Clarkson (New York Omicron) was chartered in 1965. Under the direction of its student officers, Pi Mu Epsilon has sponsored or participated in a variety of activities, including speakers on careers in mathematics, "Math and Science Day" (for high school students), student-faculty volleyball nights, pizza parties, graduate school night, and the annual initiation banquet for new members.

Women in Mathematics and Computer Science (WMCS):

Last semester we formed a new organization in our department, designed to serve the needs of undergraduate and graduate women. WMCS (Women in Mathematics and Computer Science) got off to a great start. They participated in the November 14 open house, entertaining guests at the Activities Fair with brain teasers, puzzles and games, as well as informing them about our department. The web page for this organization has been designed and is now available at WMCS just in time to serve as a valuable resource to all our students for job, internship and graduate school information. We have designed a mural that will be painted in the space next to Prof. Fowler's' office (SC 361a). The wall has been cleared and plans are underway for painting it. The constitution and bylaws are now complete and have been submitted to CUSA for approval. The first meeting this semester was scheduled for the second week of classes to nominate officers, with the elections to follow two weeks later. R. Sipcic, faculty adviser.
