History of SLVMS

The first Saint Lawrence Valley Mathematics Symposium took place March 9, 2009, at Clarkson University. The conference was organized as a workshop for undergraduate students on writing and presenting mathematics. The workshop was co-organized by Dr. Aaron Luttman of Clarkson University and Dr. Rachel Schwell of Central Connecticut State University. There were 31 students and 6 faculty in attendance from Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam, and Saint Lawrence University. Funding was provided by the Associated Colleges of the Saint Lawrence Valley.

The Second Annual Saint Lawrence Valley Mathematics Symposium took place at Clarkson University on February 19-20, 2010. The second conference was something of a "reboot" as an undergraduate mathematics conference for students from the entire region of northern New York and adjacent regions of Canada. There were 27 student presentations by undergraduate and graduate students in the mathematical sciences and related areas, as well as an exciting competition of Math Jeopardy! (won by the team from Saint Lawrence University) and a keynote address by Dr. Jackie Jensen of Sam Houston State University. With over 85 registered participants, the conference was an unqualified success!!!

The Third Annual Saint Lawrence Valley Mathematics Symposium will take place November 5-6, 2010. This year's conference will be similar in format to the Second Symposium, as it will take the form of an undergraduate research conference. All undergraduate and graduate students in the mathematical sciences are invited to attend and to present your work. Along with student presentations, the conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. David Kung of Saint Mary's College of Maryland, Math Jeopardy!, and a panel discussion on summer programs in the mathematical sciences. We look forward to seeing you in Potsdam in November!
