Graduate Student Information
Graduate Students in the mathematical sciences are invited to present their work at SLVMS III. This is an "undergraduate mathematics conference," which means that all presentations should be appropriate for an undergraduate audience! All presentations will be 20 minutes in length, including questions.
Registration Deadline: November 1, 2010
Abstract Submission Deadline EXTENDED: October 29, 2010
To Register: Send an email to Dr. Derek Habermas (habermds@potsdam.edu) of SUNY Potsdam with your
- Full name,
- Institution, and
- Student status (i.e. that you're a graduate student)
If You Would Like To Present Include (in your registration email):
- Title of your proposed presentation
- Abstract for your presentation that clearly indicates the required mathematical background. The background required should not be at a higher level than linear algebra, and preference will be given to presentations at a calculus level. Abstract should not exceed 150 words.
- Any special needs for your presentation (All rooms are outfitted with computers and projectors. If you need an overhead projector or any other special technology, please let us know.)
Why Present to Undergraduate Students: Everyone who will eventually work in academia will have to teach or present mathematics to undergraduate students, but this is a skill that is not often taught to graduate students in the mathematical sciences. Many of you will give “job talks” to an undergraduate audience, and you will be judged on your ability to present interesting mathematics to an undergraduate audience. Those working in industry are also required to communicate mathematics to a broad audience and can benefit from the experience of presenting to undergraduate students.
If you have questions on how to formulate a presentation for undergraduate students, feel free to contact Dr. Aaron Luttman (aluttman@clarkson.edu) of Clarkson University, and he will be happy to help you put together an appropriate presentation.
We will notify you that we have received your registration and if your abstract has been accepted.
