Evolution of Excellence: The Campus Master Plan

The Clarkson University Master Plan guides the development of facilities and space utilization in order to maximize initiatives that strengthen academic excellence, world-class residential programs and integrated student life activities. It embraces opportunities to enjoy our Adirondack location and take advantage of the magnificent views afforded from our vantage on the hill in the Village of Potsdam.

Significant features incorporated into the updated master plan include development of Clarkson's waterfront on the Raquette River with exceptional recreation venues, the creation of a friendly walking-campus that eases congestion from vehicular traffic by moving a majority of parking to the periphery of the campus, and the usage of indoor connecting corridors to physically and symbolically span the boundaries of the academic, residential and social components of the Clarkson experience. A new student center adjacent to the Educational Resources Center serves as the crossroads of the campus. Expansion areas for laboratories, lecture wings and classrooms are identified for each academic building. The configuration of residential housing, including new space for Greek and special interest groups, supports a vibrant learning-living community. Plans to renovate and build new housing create new options for students living on campus. Finally, the proposed plan provides for more opportunities for Clarkson to share its facilities and cultural programming with the greater Potsdam community and region through venues such as a new auditorium and meeting space in the Cheel Campus Center.

Clarkson's architectural firm, QPK Design, developed the plan shown on this Web site using data collected from focus groups and surveys of current and prospective students, the strategic plans of each major academic and administrative unit on campus, and ongoing discussions with leaders from the Clarkson University Student Association, the Alumni Association and the Board of Trustees. Proposed lawns and new athletic fields are shown in green, proposed structures are in dark magenta and new road configurations are in a lighter shade of magenta. Along with the placement of these structures on the University's 640 acres, the master plan commits Clarkson to employ green technologies and construction techniques that create a sustainable campus for generations to come.

This is your Clarkson of the future. Your comments and feedback into the Master Plan and its continued evolution are important to us. Renovations

The parking lot below the existing QUAD has been completed.

The parking area at Ross/Brooks has been eliminated and the main entrance road at Ross/Brooks has been upgraded.

A rough in for the parking lot behind the CAMP/Cheel area is expected to start November 2007 and be completed in late spring of 2008.

Cora and Bayard Clarkson Science Center Building Research and Development Addition and Alterations -  The start schedule is October 2007 and the completion schedule is October 2008.

The Hantz Field relocation and artificial surface is expected to start in the spring of 2008 and be completed in the summer of 2008.
