J2 Dependent Information
Eligibility for J-2 Status
To qualify for dependent status, you and your children must establish the following during the visa interview;- Verification of relationship to the J-1 principal. This is done by supplying a marriage license and birth certificates.
- You have sufficient funds to cover expenses while present in the United States – a copy of the employment contract from Clarkson will suffice.
- You intend to leave the United States upon termination of the principle J-1.
J2 Arrival to Clarkson University - upon arrival your dependents should bring the SEVIS DS-2019 to the ISSO to have it endorsed. This signature indiates that you have arrived in the U.S. and that Clakrson University has been notified. A copy of the passport - visa - and I-94 card will also be required.
Maintaining J-2 Dependent Status

J-2 dependents may engage in study either full or part-time

J-2 dependents can apply to receive work authorization. Procedures can be obtained through the International Students & Scholars Office

J-2 dependents are subject to the same restrictions applied to the principle J-1 - this includes insurance coverage

J-2 dependents status will terminate when the principle J-1 status ends

J-2 dependents can travel abroad and reenter the US provided the proper documentation is presented – a valid passport/visa and SEVIS DS-2019 properly endorsed for travel through the International Students & Scholars Office.

J-2 dependents must also notify the ISSO when they choose to depart the country or end their stay in J-2 dependent status.
