SAMUEL GORTON '07 - GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Sam is a senior chemical engineering major from Fairfield, Vermont. He plans to gain his Ph.D. and then to perform research and work with farmers to develop sustainable methods for cultivating, harvesting, and processing agricultural materials.
In his application, he wrote: “As a result of my experiences growing up on a dairy farm, my schooling as a chemical engineer, and my work as a co-op engineer, I believe that there exists considerable potential to refine civilization’s most vital processes to become more efficient and sustainable. As a dairy farmer, I have experienced firsthand the energy and effort that go into the production of milk. This exposure to manufacturing has strengthened my motivations to develop sustainable manufacturing processes.”
Sam’s research is on a desktop biodiesel plant and uses process intensification, a fairly new design concept. He is working under Professor Roshan Jachuck.
