NIALL MANGEN '08 - GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Niall is a junior physics/ mathematics double major from McAllen, Texas. She plans to obtain a Ph.D. and eventually to do work using nanotechnology in the field of environmental physics.
In her application, Niall wrote: “I am drawn to the sciences by the enjoyment I take in solving puzzles and the gratification I gain from the positive impact the solutions have on society. I want to be interdisciplinary, but for me physics and mathematics are the most challenging and, therefore, the most interesting. A solid background in physics and math will also allow me to solve problems in chemistry and biology. Through these subjects, I plan on looking at the problems humanity faces today and solving them in ways that will be embraced by society. I am particularly interested in developing new fuel resources and revitalizing the environment.”
Niall’s research involves modeling diffusion with random walks. She works under Professor Daniel ben-Avraham of the Physics Department.
