Clarkson's Sustainability Plan
In 2014 President Tony Collins signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment. In 2015 the commitments were changed to a more robust commitment now named the Climate Leadership Commitment under the direction of the nonprofit organization Second Nature. Tony Collins was one of the first university presidents to sign this updated commitment. As part of the commitment, Clarkson is developing both a Climate Action Plan for mitigating greenhouse gases, a Climate Resilience Plan for leading our community as we adapt to climate change, and a Solid Waste Plan to better manage solid waste.
"Last fiscal year, we emitted 18,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents from known sources" (Dr. Susan Powers featured in the CU Integrator). In order to identify specific targets and goals, we are looking for your input. Our goal is to be a net zero carbon emission institution, and we want to know how you envision this happening!
Below is our current plan for re-thinking Clarkson's sustainability:
The idea is to link Clarkson's inputs and outputs in a way that harmonizes with the Potsdam and Northern New York Community. Our goal is to link Clarkson's output of solid waste, in the form of facilities management waste (construction and demolition), food waste, and residential and office wastes to the Potsdam community through activities such as anaerobic digestion and Take It or Leave It events. Additionally, we strive to source our food and energy inputs from the Northern New York and Potsdam community. Note, that energy is currently being derived from a Potsdam hydroelectric plant and Clarkson solar panels.
