What is Gift Planning?

Glossary

In recent years, several factors have raised the profile of the fundraising profession. Economic shifts, an aging boomer population, government oversight, an increased need for charities and a rising interest in charitable causes have placed a spotlight on the profession. To respond both to donors and the needs of society, fundraising operations have become more sophisticated. For example, older terms such as “development office,” which made sense to internal administrators have been replaced by terms such as “office of philanthropy,” intended to explain the function to external constituents. Reflecting this new approach, Clarkson changed the name of its fundraising area to “Office of Philanthropy.”

An office of philanthropy takes a constituent-centered approach to working with volunteers and donors. The Clarkson office helps volunteers and donors define, explore and expand their lifelong philanthropy, especially as it relates to higher education and Clarkson, with the knowledge that we can all make a difference by having a philanthropic plan. The process of helping individuals make the most of their giving is called “gift planning.” Clarkson gift planning officers must have a broad range of skills to help donors maximize the benefits of their gifts and their plans, both for themselves and for Clarkson.
