Hazardous Spills

EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO HAZARDOUS SPILLS

If there is any risk to your health or safety, evacuate the area and close door.
Do not attempt to stop or contain the spill.

GENERAL PROCEDURES: 1. Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Go to the nearest emergency shower and flush the contaminated area for 15 minutes. 2. Get medical attention for injured personnel: a. For minor injuries of students, go to the Student Health Center (Hamlin-Powers Center). b. For all other injuries, call 911. 3. Put on protective clothing. 4. In climate controlled rooms, respiratory protection is required. Call Campus Safety & Security (x6666). 5. Remove glass using forceps. 6. Attempt to stop any release into the environment (ex: floor drains, etc).


SMALL SPILLS
CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL RADIOACTIVE
1. Use the spill kit in your lab (directions provided in the spill kit). 2. After area has been thoroughly cleaned, call Custodial Services at x6439 to mop the area. Biosafety Level 1 Material 1. Clean with disinfectant and paper towels. Biosafety Level 2 Material 1. Cover with paper towels and apply appropriate disinfectant. 2. Allow 20 minutes contact time. 3. Post sign stating “Biological Spill Clean-up in Progress – Do Not Remove Materials” 4. Clean-up spill materials. 1. Cover spill area with absorbent. 2. Mark area of spill as contaminated with “radiation tape.” 3. Start decontamination procedures. 4. Monitor all personnel for possible contamination. 5. Notify the Radiation Safety Officer.
LARGE SPILLS
CHEMICAL BIOLOGICAL RADIOACTIVE
1. Evacuate room. 2. Call Campus Safety & Security at x6666 and report your name, spill location, and details of spill. 3. Post sign on door indicating spill. 4. Remain in a safe area to assist spill response personnel. If spill occurs after hours, remain near phone to be connected with spill response personnel. Biosafety Level 1 Material 1. Clean with disinfectant and paper towels. Biosafety Level 2 Material 1. Evacuate room and close doors for 30 minutes. 2. Post sign on door indicating spill. 3. Cover with paper towels and carefully pour fresh 1:10 bleach solution over towels. 4. Clean-up spill materials and re-wipe area with fresh 1:10 bleach solution. 1. Evacuate room. 2. Call Campus Safety & Security at x6666 and report your name, spill location, and details of spill. 3. Post sign on door indicating spill. 4. Remain in a safe area to assist spill response personnel. If spill occurs after hours, remain near phone to be connected with spill response personnel.
