First-Year Experience

A Course in Innovation and Technical Entrepreneurship

As a first-year student in the E&M program, you will be participating in a year-long sequence of courses specially designed for you. EM120 (Team-based Design and Innovation) and EM121 (Technological Entrepreneurship) are the only courses under the direct supervision of the E&M department. The two-semester course challenges students to research, develop, build, test and market a product for potential retail sales.

The novel courses were developed to provide E&M students with an overview of the world of technological innovation and lets them experience on a smaller scale, the real challenges they will face in their careers. Students will understand the benefits in the workplace of the interdisciplinary major and get a solid foundation for the business, engineering, math and science classes that will follow over the next three years.
