New Faculty: Santosh Mahapatra, Assistant Professor
Santosh Mahapatra joined the Clarkson School of Business faculty in 2006 as an assistant professor in the Global Supply Chain Management Program after completing his Ph.D. at Michigan State University (MSU). He teaches an undergraduate course in Operations/Production Management as well as an upper level undergraduate/MBA course in Green Supply Chain.
Dr. Mahapatra’s primary research interests, as well as his Ph.D. work, encompass optimal sourcing strategy under price uncertainty, strategic sourcing, governance mechanisms, supplier development for superior performance, and buyer-supplier relationship management. Notable in their fields, Distinguished Professor Ram Narasimhan, the John H. McConnell Professor of Supply Chain Management, and Professor Shlomo Levental, Department of Statistics and Probability, both of MSU, served as Dr. Mahapatra’s dissertation advisors.

In his 24-year career with IBM, Clarkson Engineering and Global Operations Management (EGOM) program participant Jeff Boniello has admittedly taken the road less travelled. “I have found the best career experiences, and often the best life experiences, occur once you leave your comfort zone,” he notes of the fact he has taken on new positions across the IBM corporate structure as a result of some unique opportunities.

Emerging Research: Role of C-TPAT in Preventing Supply Chain Disruptions
Dr. Santosh Mahapatra is currently engaged in examining the impacts of C-TPAT (Customs and Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) on supply chain performance. C-TPAT is a voluntary compliance program that allows firms to manage the security proactively to avoid what competitive firms with complex supply chains dread the most: disruption, delay and demurrage!
From the C-TPAT perspective, notes Dr. Mahapatra, a supply chain is defined “from the point of origin (manufacturer/supplier/vendor) to the point of distribution.”

Motorcycles and Managing Buyer-Supplier Relationships
Our featured new faculty member, Dr. Santosh Mahapatra is currently conducting research with Dr. Paolo Barbieri, Visiting Professor at the Clarkson University School of Business. Dr. Barbieri serves as Assistant Professor of Management Engineering at the Department of Management, University of Bologna (Italy). Their study, in collaboration with Distinguished Professor Ram Narasimhan of Michigan State University, examines the opportunities and challenges in managing buyer-supplier relationships in the high-end, innovative motorcycle industry in Italy.

Clarkson Delivers Customized Executive Seminar to Honeywell
Clarkson University worked with leaders from Honeywell (formerly Hand Held Products) to develop and deliver a customized Executive Seminar in Global Supply Chain Management for 30 mid and senior level managers at the company’s Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. facility in October. This Honeywell division is a worldwide leading manufacturer of data collection and management solutions for in-premise mobile, and transaction processing applications.
