Do companies supply housing for
Co-op students?
Most companies do not provide housing for Co-op students, but most do pay students’ a housing stipend and/or provide assistance in helping students to secure housing. This is a very important issue for Co-op’s because for many students, it may be the first time they will be living on their own.
What type of supervision for the Co-op student is expected by the University?
The University expects that all Co-op students will be assigned a direct supervisor or mentor, who will provide guidance to the student while on Co-op. According to student surveys, a critical time for Co-op’s is the initial orientation period when they are learning the job. Providing a formal orientation and appropriate support in the beginning of the Co-op often results in the experience being more positive for the student and more beneficial for the company. Students report to us that although they do not want their supervisor micro-managing them, they do appreciate direct and honest feedback.
How are companies expected to evaluate the Co-op student?
The University will provide a written initial and final evaluation that company staff are asked to complete for each Co-op student. The evaluations are sent to the University’s Co-op office where they are reviewed by staff. Any problems or concerns expressed by a company or a Co-op student is immediately addressed by CU Co-op staff.
