Chemical Engineering Program Objectives and Outcomes
The Chemical Engineering Department's educational objectives state the general goals of the program. The Department will produce graduates that:
Objective 1: Practice chemical engineering* in traditional and emerging fields.
Objective 2: Pursue advanced degrees
Objective 3: Develop their knowledge and skills after graduation.
Objective 4: Contribute to society and maintain ties to the university.
To accomplish these objectives, the Department of Chemical Engineering works toward specific learning outcomes--descriptions of the skills and knowledge a student will need to meet the department objectives. Upon graduation our students will be able to:
Outcome 1: Identify, formulate, and solve problems using mathematics, chemistry, physics, and engineering principles and appropriate tools.
Outcome 2: Design chemical engineering processes while including economic, safety, environmental, and ethical considerations.
Outcome 3: Communicate effectively in written and oral forms.
Outcome 4: Plan experiments, analyze data, draw logical conclusions, and recognize the need for further experiments where appropriate.
* Here we define chemical engineering as the discipline that requires a thorough grounding in chemistry and a working knowledge of advanced chemistry; material and energy balances applied to chemical processes; thermodynamics of physical and chemical equilibria; heat, mass and momentum transfer; chemical reaction engineering; continuous and stage-wise separation processes; process dynamics and control; process design and appropriate modern experimental and computing techniques.
