Research Interests

Dr. Rasmussen is working on a theory of nucleation. His research interests include preparation of monodispersed metal powders, measuring undercooling and nucleation rates for solidification, producing microcellular foamed polymers, depositing thin films and ceramic powders by chemical vapor deposition, developing controlled dielectric materials, and measuring particle size and size distributions by fiberoptic dynamic light scattering. Dr. Rasmussen also investigates solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces; nucleation and growth of new phases in liquids, solutions, metals and alloys; equilibrium and non-equilibrium transformations in multi-component systems; generation and properties of thin films; generation of mono-dispersed metal powders and their applications; bonding of metals to oxides and other low conductivity solids; generation of catalysts for oxidation and reactions for fuel cell applications; development of dynamic laser light scattering as a probe for supersaturated liquids under non-conservative fields, detecting density fluctuations in materials and sizing of particles in concentrated suspensions.
