Clarkson Student Spotlight: August '10

In this Section

Valerie Bethka ‘11
Biology Major, Psychology Minor

You could say that Val Bethka is your typical Clarkson student - and by that we mean that she keeps herself pretty busy. Val, who hails from Scotia, N.Y., is active in the PhiDE Medical Fraternity, the women's rugby team, the RASC-AL SPEED team (Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage) that regularly competes in a NASA and National Institute of Aerospace competition, and she is a leader of freshman pre-orientation outdoor trips with the CU Outing Club. We caught up with Val to see what she's up to when school's not in session and more.

What are your plans for the summer?
I'm doing research over the summer here at Clarkson. I will be working with my professors on Segmentation Image Analysis: A New Method to Identify Cryptic Species. This is basically identifying different species of lizards using their pictures, and then teaching a computer to differentiate between them.

What is your favorite food?
Definitely Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

If you weren't a biology major, what would you be?
I would love to be a world traveler, is that a job or major?

What are your favorite things about Clarkson?
The people! Everyone here is willing to help each other out with school work and people are really motivated in what they do.

What talent would love to have? Do you have a talent?
I can juggle pretty well, but I would love to learn how to play the guitar.

What is your idea of a perfect Friday night at Clarkson?
Hanging out with my roommates and heading down to Duff's to dance our butts off! And don't forget pizza at Little Italy afterwards.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
Harry Potter. That's self explanatory.

What are your plans for after graduation?
I'm hoping to go onto to medical school and become a podiatrist. I really want to work in sports medicine.

What is your favorite class that you've taken?
Forensics Lab - it was a lot of fun doing the mock crime scenes!

Why did you choose Clarkson?
Clarkson's overall reputation and scholarships opportunities.

You're stranded on a desert island. What three things would you take?
My dog. A knife. Bear Grylls from Man vs. Wild.
