Alumni in Action
Ambassadors of the Adirondacks
Growing up just a mile from Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, N.Y., it’s not hard to believe that Evan M. Williams ’09 knows a thing or two about outdoor activities in the Adirondack Mountains.
While a student at Clarkson, Evan often shared his knowledge with his fellow classmates, taking them on hiking and skiing trips throughout the park. And now, he’s sharing his knowledge with the world through a website that he has created with his wife, Hilary A. (Lockwood) Williams ’09.
Hilary may not have lived as close to the Adirondacks, but she did spend lots of time camping, hiking, exploring and kayaking in the area with her family before enrolling at Clarkson and then even more time as a student at Clarkson. And now that they’re alumni, they’re still taking advantage of all the Adirondack Park has to offer.
“We have been and continue to be constantly inspired by the endless beauty of the Adirondack Park,” says Hilary. “We are always discovering new facets of the Park that motivate us to get out and explore it more and more.”
Wanting to share their personal experiences and perspectives on the Adirondack Region in Northern New York state, Evan and Hilary created Pure Adirondacks, or PureADK, a website dedicated to adventure in the Adirondack Mountains, in January 2011.
On the site, they share their stories and experiences and try to put emphasize making the most of the Adirondacks. “By documenting our discoveries through photos, videos and personalized posts, we hope that PureADK will not only act as an educational and informational resource, but also as an entertaining way to get a unique view on all that the Adirondack Park has to offer,” adds Evan.
After graduating in 2009, the couple moved to Baltimore, Md. However, they decided to move back to New York state to pursue new career and educational opportunities and live closer to the Adirondack Park.
Hilary, who majored in environmental science & policy with a minor in biology at Clarkson, is currently working towards a master’s degree in forest hydrology and watershed resource management at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, N.Y. She also works for EA Engineering, Science & Technology, an environmental consulting firm.
Evan, who majored in e-Business with a concentration in e-Commerce and a minor in digital mediated communication, works for Virtucom Group, an online content publishing firm in Syracuse.
On top of their day jobs, both Hilary and Evan are responsible for keeping PureADK up to date with the latest stories, tips and facts. “Evan was the one to set up the website initially since he has a background in web design. We both write stories and make updates to our social media pages, and the photography is all our own,” explains Hilary.
The couple takes trips to the Adirondacks at least one or twice a month, which often include camping, hiking, kayaking, skiing and snowshoeing depending on the season.
“We aspire to act as ambassadors for the Adirondacks, piquing the interest of current students and motivating them to take advantage of living on the Adirondack Park’s front step while they continue their education at Clarkson,” they say.
