Two Students Win Society of Women Engineers Scholarships
Emily A. Stefano and Elsbeth D. Adams, both mechanical engineering students at Clarkson University, were recently selected as recipients of $2,500 scholarships from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
Stefano is a sophomore from East Amherst, N.Y.; Adams is a junior from Evans Mills, N.Y.
The two students are members of the Clarkson chapter of SWE, a national not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in engineering.
"It's great to be rewarded by SWE," says Stefano. "I joined SWE because I knew they planned a lot of activities for younger girls to help them learn more about science and engineering; and I wish there were more events like that for me when I was younger."
Clarkson's chapter of SWE has done numerous projects, including hosting an event for local 8th grade girls to learn about science and engineering through a day of engaging activities such as making lotion and balsa wood gliders. The group also helps local Girl Scout troops earn science badges by hosting a science experiments clinic.
"It is my goal to raise awareness about the possibilities of engineering for women," says Adams. "As a woman in engineering I represent the future. I have a passion for problem solving, and engineering is the most advantageous avenue for helping solve the problems of the world today."
