Professor Egon Matijevic' Inspires Excellence for Fifty Years

For 50 years at Clarkson University, Professor Egon Matijevic' , theVictor K. LaMer Professor of Colloid and Surface Science, has been inspiring excellence in the laboratory, the classroom and in life. As a world-renowned researcher with numerous scientific publications and patents to his name, he has defied convention among his higher education peers and been a leader among the Clarkson faculty to mentor students to span boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures in order to link discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.

Professor Egon Matijevic' (the Victor K. LaMer Professor of Colloid and Surface Science at Clarkson University)

Colleagues from the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science and alumni from the University’s New York City Regional Chapter will be honoring Professor Matijevic' and his wife, Bozica, on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the Century Club on W. 43 rd Street. This occasion also celebrates his 85 th birthday and he will deliver a short entertaining lecture. Similar alumni gatherings have already been held in San Francisco and Boston. Events in Chicago and additional locations in New York state are planned for later this summer. All of these events are part of a year long celebration marking his contributions and tenure at Clarkson and attendance is open to all of his scholarly colleagues, friends and alumni.

Former students, friends and colleagues have chosen to further honor Professor Matijevic' by establishing a special endowed scholarship fund in his honor as well as a named lectureship. A culminating full-day event, “Egon’s Day,” will be held in Potsdam on Thursday, October 18, 2007 for the campus community and all donors to these special funds. Nobel Laureates Ivar Giaever and Richard P. Ernst, and Sir John Meurig Thomas at the University of Cambridge, UK, will be guest lecturers for this special occasion.

If you are interested in learning more about these activities to honor Professor Matijevic' or would like to join in one of the regional celebrations, please contact Clarkson University’s Division of Marketing and External Relations at (315)268-4483, or Kelly Chezum (Assistant to the President at Clarkson University) at chezumk@clarkson.edu.

Clarkson University Professor Sergiy Minko to Speak at Nano Science and Technology Institute

Professor Sergiy Minko ( the Egon Matijevic' Chaired Professor of Chemistry at Clarkson University)

Professor Sergiy Minko, the Egon Matijevic' Chaired Professor of Chemistry at Clarkson University, will speak at the Nano Science and Technology Institute in Santa Clara, California this May. He is one of five speakers to present to 4,000 attendees in the polymer nanotech symposium, one of the fastest growing areas of the nanotech conferences. All courses are presented by leading experts in their respective fields. Professor Minko will discuss "Design and Fabrication of Nanopatterned Polymer Brushes with Applications as Switchable Microfluidics Gates." Some common applications of microfluidics technology are ink-jet printing and biochips used for analyses of DNA and drugs.

Professor Minko is the leader of Clarkson's NanoStructured Materials Group, an interdisciplinary research team focused on the study and fabrication of synthetic "smart" materials and biomaterials on a nanoscale and the scale of single molecules. His research and expertise in materials science focuses on the areas of smart/responsive polymer materials, smart colloids, nanostructured thin polymer films, formation of nanowires and nanoparticles, adhesion, wetting, adsorption regulations, and single molecule devices.
