CAMP Professor Daryush K. Aidun Carries Out Research to Assess Engineering Systems Reliability
Professor and Department Chair Dr. Daryush Aidun (PI) and Dr. Pier Marzocca (Co-PI), both of Clarkson’s Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (MAE) Department, have received over $900,000 from GE Energy Systems ( with Mr. Richard Keck as General Manager) to investigate the Reliability and Life Assessment of their Gas Turbine Intercooler Systems. The project involves 2 M.S. and 3 Ph.D. students.
This research
activity includes the use of reliability and life assessment techniques
to analyze corrosion and fatigue in intercooler systems (with a
two pass air-to-water shell and tube heat exchanger used to improve
turbine engine performance). Corrosion and cyclic loads can reduce
equipment performance and reliability, and lead to failures and
shutdowns. Therefore being able to predict the reliability of a
system’s operation in terms of its time to failure and the
rate of corrosion damage is very important. For this work, physical
based modeling and simulations are required to efficiently study
the reliability of the components and of the overall system. See
Figure 1.
