  CAMP Professors Sergiy Minko and Igor Sokolov are Coauthors of a Most Frequently Accessed Journal Article

CAMP Professor Sergiy Minko (the Egon Matijevic' Chaired Professor of Chemistry at Clarkson University) and CAMP Professor Igor Sokolov ( of Clarkson’s Department of Physics) are coauthors of the second most frequently accessed article published in the Journal Chemistry ofMaterials (January - March, 2006). Other contributing authors include Professor Minko’s research associate Dr. Mikhail Motornov and the graduate student Roman Sheparovych, who is co-advised by Professors Minko and Sokolov. In this paper, the authors describe the use of a magnetic field for the fabrication of wire-like structures made by linking Fe3O4superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPN) with polyelectrolyte molecules. These wires are structures wherein the SPN particles are linked permanently and they conserve the shape in spite of thermal motion in the fluid. Further, upon deposition onto solid substrates in the presence of an external magnetic field, they form parallel patterns which remain attached to the substrate with lithography-like stubbornness and, thus, are immune to washings and changes in the direction of the applied magnetic field.

CAMP to Sponsor Eleventh International Symposium on Chemical Mechanical Planarization

CAMP will sponsor its Eleventh International Symposium on Chemical-Mechanical Planarization during the month of August. The four-day symposium/workshop will be held (August 13-16, 2006) at the Hilton Resort in Lake Placid, New York. It will include presentations by industrial and university representatives and a poster session. Dr. Manabu Tsujimura (Ebara Corporation), Dr. Paul Fischer ( Intel Corporation), and Dr. Gundu Sabde (Micron Technology) will join Distinguished University Professor /CAMP Director S.V. Babu, and CAMP Professor Yuzhuo Li as co-organizers of this year’s International CMP Conference.

NanoDynamics Inc. Commercializes Nanosilver Platelets

The June 2006 issue of the American Ceramic Society Bulletin announced a significant commercial breakthrough made by NanoDynamics Inc., in Buffalo, New York. The article mentioned that NanoDynamics (formerly a Corporate Member and now a new Corporate Sponsor of CAMP) is commercializing nanosilver platelets that are especially adaptable to the electronics industry. These six-sided particles are exceptionally thin and many times smaller than the silver flakes used in current conducting adhesives (Figure 1). Therefore the platelets can be printed in layers less than 200 nm thick, which allows for the creation of smaller electronic features and components. The technology for this work (done in collaboration with Clarkson University) was developed at Clarkson University under the direction of CAMP Professor Dan Goia.
