Dr. William G. America is CAMP’s New Deputy Director

Dr. William G. America has joined CAMP as its new Deputy Director. He brings thirty-two years of industrial experience, including five years as a Senior Engineer at IBM in East Fishkill, NY., and has been awarded 17 patents. Dr. America (who received his doctor’s degree in Chemistry in 2002) was the first candidate to complete Clarkson University’s External Ph.D. Program. Distinguished University Professor / CAMP Director S.V. Babu and Clarkson University’s former CAMP Director and Chemistry Professor Raymond Mackay served as his research advisers for the graduate program. His thesis for the Ph.D. in Chemistry was titled “Mechanism of Amino Acid Interaction with Silicon Nitride Surface During Chemical Mechanical Planarization”. Dr. America investigated the use of chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP), routinely used in semiconductor fabrication, allowing the creation of planar structures that are not practical without it. Of particular interest to him was the mechanism of chemical interactions of slurry additives on the inhibition of hydrolysis of silicon nitride and subsequent reduction of the removal rate, during STI CMP. This research grew from a project created by Dr. America while he was at the Eastman Kodak Company, which funded Professor Babu to investigate high selectivity slurries. Eventually, this led to a CMP slurry formulated and commercialized by Ferro Corporation for which Clarkson University receives royalties.
