Program Requirements

Master's Degrees  |  Doctoral Degrees

Listed here are the general requirements for completion of an MS or PhD degree.  These are intended to be guidelines, and are not exhaustive.  For complete information on University requirements for graduate students, please review the catalog sections found at: www.clarkson.edu/catalog/10-11/grad_school.html

Additional requirements are set by each program.  Please see the links on the right to review specific program requirements, or check with your department office for more information.


Requirements for the Master's Degree
(as listed in the 2010-2011 Clarkson Catalog)

  1. 30 credit hours graduate level coursework (minimum) as follows:
    a. 20 credit hours course plus seminar work (minimum).
    b. Only courses numbered 500 and above, with a grade of C or better, will be accepted for graduate credit.
    c. 10 credit hours transfer credit (B or better) may be accepted (maximum).
    NOTE: EAP courses do not count toward the minimum requirements for the MS degree.
  2. Satisfactory completion of a research or comparable professional experience, as follows:
    a. Written thesis based on independent research; OR,
    b. Comprehensive examination; OR,
    c. Appropriate, professionally oriented special project.
  3. At least one year of academic study beyond the undergraduate degree.
  4. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  5. All work must be completed within 5 calendar years.

 

Requirements for the Doctoral Degree
(as listed in the 2010-2011 Clarkson Catalog)

  1. 90 credit hours graduate level coursework (minimum) as follows:
    a. 24 credit hours course work (minimum).
    b. 9 credit hours taken in residence (minimum) - includes distance learning courses taught by Clarkson University
    c. 6 credit hours seminar work (minimum).
    d. 30 credit hours transfer credit (B or better) may be accepted (maximum).
  2. Satisfactory completion of the Ph.D. candidacy procedure within two years of admission and full-time study in the Ph.D. program.
  3. Satisfactory completion of a written dissertation, defended orally as part of the final examination.
  4. A minimum of three academic years of full-time graduate study.  Two years of study must be in residence at Clarkson.
  5. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  6. All work must be completed within seven years after the student is identified as a Ph.D. candidate.
