In his 2003 inaugural address, President Tony Collins
invited all of Clarkson’s stakeholders — alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and their parents — to join him as Clarkson launched its long-range Evolution to Excellence strategic plan. He said then that Clarkson would build its future on three fundamental building blocks: academic excellence, marshalling of financial resources and alumni engagement.
Eight years later and buoyed by multiple successes in these areas, Clarkson is now accelerating its Evolution to Excellence to capitalize fully on its emerging national reputation for leading innovation and launching leaders for a global marketplace.
On October 14, 2011, Clarkson officially kicked off its ambitious $225 million fundraising initiative, the Evolution to Excellence (E2E) Campaign, with more than 200 people gathered in the University’s new Student Center for the gala dinner event.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome back our alumni and friends who are strongly committed to the outstanding educational experience for students and world-changing innovation at Clarkson,” said Collins. “With the continued support and generosity of our donors, we will continue to advance critical construction projects, improve the excellence of our faculty, grow our pool of scholarship aid and provide many other value-added opportunities that, taken together, realize the vision of a Clarkson education.”
Campaign co-chairs and Clarkson alumni John M. Brilbeck ’68 and Kevin T. Parker ’81 announced that the University has raised $184 million during the advance phase, or 82 percent of the campaign goal. The campaign is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2014.
The success of Clarkson’s bold E2E Campaign lies in combining the community’s best efforts and steadfast commitment with the University’s strengths to transform Clarkson into a model of education that is aligned with the challenges and opportunities of the globalized 21st century world.

“Clarkson’s commitment to improving the world through innovation, technology and enterprise can be measured in large part by the investment we make in our people,” says Thomas Young, provost.
“We recognize that our reputation is built upon the quality and reputation of our faculty. Finding solutions to complex challenges requires the expertise and creativity of leaders from different fields working in collaboration. Putting the right people in place and bringing together the right combination of talent is the first and most important step in achieving our mission.”
Building Clarkson’s academic excellence means investing in people and programs. This approach will enhance and expand research areas where Clarkson has already established an international reputation, including advanced materials, biotechnology, entrepreneurship, the environment and energy, and global supply chain management.
Investing in the Campus and Facilities
The Clarkson Master Plan guides the development of facilities and space utilization in order to maximize initiatives that strengthen academic excellence, world-class residential programs and integrated student life activities.
Among the plans to enhance Clarkson’s learning-living environment is the development of the Raquette River waterfront, the creation of a walking campus and the usage of indoor connecting corridors.
Also in the plan? An expansion and updating of laboratories, lecture wings and classrooms in each academic building; a reconfiguration of existing residential housing; new space for Greek and special interest groups; and new housing options for students living on campus.
The Master Plan commits Clarkson to employ green technologies and construction techniques that create a sustainable campus
for generations to come.
Investing in The Clarkson Fund
Gifts made to The Clarkson Fund provide resources that make an immediate impact on the University. As a flexible source of revenue, an unrestricted gift is quickly directed toward the University’s immediate priorities and needs, and allows Clarkson to take advantages of opportunities that arise.
Each year The Clarkson Fund supports financial aid and scholarships for students, technology advancements, faculty research, including start-up packages for new faculty, academic support services, and Golden Knight Athletics. FY10 unrestricted funds also supported equipment for science labs, Adirondack Outreach Initiatives, the establishment of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, the Student Success Center, and enabled Clarkson to offer student free access to the KnightLink online career site.
