Loren E. Edwards '49 (BA)
A longtime administrator at Clarkson, passed away January 16, 2005, at Athens (GA) Regional Medical Center. Loren served for 35 years in several capacities, including admissions development, alumni and college relations. Early on he worked with Prof. William Farrisee on the award-winning Clarkson Alumnus magazine. Following his years at Clarkson, he became vice president of what it is now Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Past Trustee Roger W. Johnson '56 (BA), '94 (HD) who spent nearly a decade as president and chairman of Western Digital Corporation, and who became the highest-ranking Republican in the Clinton administration when he led the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) from 1993 to 1996, passed away on February 25, 2005, at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif., of complications following lung cancer. Graduating from Clarkson at the top of his class, Roger began his career at GE and went on to positions of increasing responsibility in the computer industry. His reputation for streamlining management led to his appointment at GSA, which provides buildings, technology, services and workplace resources to federal agencies. A mainstay of alumni activities in California, he received a Golden Knight award in 1982, returned to campus to serve as an Executive-in-Residence, and also served as a Trustee of the University from 1995 to 1996.
Frederick C. Burgwardt III '56 (EE), '61 (MS EE)
Frederick C. Burgwardt III '56 (EE), '61 (MS EE), who taught at Clarkson for nearly nine years in Electrical Engineering, passed away February 10, 2005, at his home near Knoxville, Tenn., after a brief illness. Having returned to Clarkson to earn his master's degree, he became an assistant professor and taught at his alma mater until 1962. Frederick worked at Kodak and Xerox before founding his own company, Matrix Learning Systems, providing technical writing services. His son, Frederick P. Burgwardt (CEE) P.E., graduated from Clarkson in 1981.
Robert W. Carroll Jr. '63 (Ph)
Robert W. Carroll Jr. '63 (Ph), who worked at Clarkson for over 36 years in information technology, most recently as a computer systems analyst, succumbed to cancer on April 10, 2005. An accomplished speleologist who was dedicated to the exploration, study, and conservation of caves, Robert was a Fellow of the American Speleological Society and legendary figure among cavers throughout the northeastern United States. He is credited with discovering many caves in remote forest areas of the region and contributed 132 articles to The Northeastern Caver, a quarterly, whose June 2005 issue is dedicated to Robert.
