Chamber leader Karen St.
Hilaire: building momentum
and consensus.
Karen St. Hilaire '75, '98
Innovative chamber executive and community leader
During the six years she has served as executive director of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, Karen St. Hilaire '75 (SS), '98 (MS MS), has spearheaded a variety of innovative and successful initiatives. These include the highly acclaimed two-year-old Northern Adirondack Trading Company, an economy-boosting chamber partnership that has linked regional entrepreneurs, Clarkson students and faculty, eBay, Hewlett-Packard, and the office of U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton. It has been chosen one of four finalists in the World Chambers Competition being held in South Africa this June.
In recognition of Karen's achievements, last January she received the Excellence in Leadership Award for 2005 from the Chamber Alliance of New York State, an association of executives from local and regional chambers affiliated with the Business Council of New York State.
"I feel very good about the fact that we are re-thinking our future here in St. Lawrence County and that we are building momentum," says Karen. "As more people get involved in making changes that bring about a better community, more people join the effort. We have several groups of 15 to 20 people who sit around the table strategizing a better future: entrepreneurs, professors, government reps, farmers, engineers and fishermen. They come in suits. They come in jeans. And they respect each other. Our biggest achievement at the chamber is not one project or another. It's building consensus for a better county and North Country."
But the projects are indeed significant. For example, in 2003 under Karen's leadership, the chamber founded the annual St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament, which reels in anglers from all over the world to fish between Ogdensburg and Massena. She worked with the Development Authority of the North Country to help bring fiber optic cable to the area and now is working with three companies on a "last mile" solution that will be a demonstration project for rural America. Chamber tourism publications have quadrupled in the past four years, and inquiries are growing by 10 percent a year. A major race track in Brasher Falls, a regional airline to provide frequent low-cost flights to the region, and a St. Lawrence River tourism and research center are on the horizon.
Senator Clinton has called the eBay partnership involving Clarkson a model for rural economies across the nation, and is working to expand the program in New York. She also appointed Karen to the 12-person Board of New Jobs for New York, which oversees the efforts to connect venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.
In addition to leading the county chamber, Karen is also president and CEO of Vanguard Communications & Consulting, which provides counsel to business and industrial clients, as well as workplace training and development on topics such as diversity, sexual harassment, workplace communication, and team building.
During the past year, Karen has also made time to teach a class in Personal Selling at Clarkson, where she previously served as Director of University Communications and Public Relations. "What has surprised and pleased me," she says, "is the depth of commitment the students have to their own education. They have big plans for their futures — and I have no doubt they will achieve them." Next semester, she will teach a course in entrepreneurial leadership.
Karen fondly recalls her own undergraduate years at Clarkson, which had recently gone co-ed. "I was the only woman in almost every class I took. I learned to think in a competitive fashion and to never let other people's expectations of me determine what I would or would not do." In 1998 she earned an M.S. in Management Systems from Clarkson.
"When I was a child," reflects Karen, "I was struck with an illness that confined me to bed for months and it had a profound effect on my thinking. I love life and I feel we are each given a limited time here on earth. For me, I want to maximize each day and make it count. I vowed as a child that if I ever got out of bed, I would not be deterred. And I feel I have kept that promise to myself."

Tracy Stigers '79
Combining technical expertise and interpersonal skills benefits career and the environment
For Tracy Stigers '79 (CEE), successfully addressing environmental problems requires more than applying high-tech, workable solutions. "It really calls for a large degree of sensitivity to the public, its concerns, and reactions," she says. This combination of technical expertise and public relations savvy, along with a genuine commitment to improve water quality, has helped her rise to the top of her field.
Tracy is vice president and chief engineer at Brown and Caldwell, one of the nation's top environmental engineering and wastewater design firms with 45 offices throughout the U.S. Based out of its Walnut Creek, CA, headquarters, Tracy is the municipal services and wastewater leader for the company's Western Business Unit, a group responsible for more than 40 percent of Brown and Caldwell's new business in the region. A recent project involves working on a new master plan for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission that will establish the course of water transport, treatment and reuse within the city for the next 30 years.
"My particular area of expertise is biosolids, the residuals from wastewater treatment that can be recycled and used in other applications," she explains. "The work is challenging, but it is also deeply gratifying because I know that these projects will have a positive impact on communities and the environment well into the future."
Tracy enjoys the work's variety and the opportunities to keep learning. "I've worked with dozens of corporate, federal, municipal and public sector clients on very small to very large projects," she says. "On each one I am doing something different, learning something new. The opportunity to apply that knowledge and teach it to others is also very rewarding."
Tracy has served on the Clarkson School of Engineering Advisory Council since 1994, and credits her alma mater with providing the firm educational foundation that helped her achieve early professional success. "My training at Clarkson in civil engineering, as well as my graduate work in environmental engineering from the California Institute of Technology, helped prepare me for the technical tasks associated with my work," says Tracy.
Tracy is also a director of the Water Environment Federation and a member of the California Water Environment Association's (CWEA) board of directors. At the CWEA Annual Conference in April, Tracy was honored with the Water Environment Federation's Arthur Sidney Bedell Award, which acknowledges extraordinary personal service to the association. She is starting to raise funds and awareness for Water For People, an international organization dedicated to helping impoverished people worldwide by supporting sustainable drinking water, sanitation and hygiene projects.
Tracy and her husband, Craig Jensen, recently completed construction of a reproduction Victorian farmhouse in Walnut Creek, Calif., and love to share the space and view with their two Labradors, family and friends.

Georgia Keresty '83
Quality and safety management leader in pharmaceuticals industry
Georgia Keresty '83 (ChE) credits the scientific and technical education she received as a chemical engineering major at Clarkson as laying the foundation for her high-profile career in the pharmaceuticals and biotechnology fields. But she is quick to point out that learning experiences outside the classroom were also critical in putting her on a leadership path. "The many opportunities I had at Clarkson to develop problem-solving and leadership skills, such as serving as president of Clarkson's Society of Women Engineers collegiate chapter and as a Resident Director, have truly helped me succeed in management."
As vice president of Worldwide Quality and Environment, Health and Safety for Johnson & Johnson's Global Biologics Supply Chain, Georgia travels the globe overseeing some 850 employees at eight different manufacturing and laboratory locations. She is a recognized leader in worldwide quality and safety management and has co-authored three industry guidelines on technology transfer and engineering baseline standards for the pharmaceutical industry. She serves as chairperson of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers International Leadership Forum. Georgia is also one of two U.S. representatives to the International Conference on Harmonization for the global pharmaceutical industry.
"It is exciting to be on the cutting-edge of biotechnology advances and I really enjoy the challenges of working within the many different cultural, economic and regulatory frameworks of the global community," says Georgia.
Despite her busy travel schedule and a firm commitment to her work and profession, Georgia is active in the Clarkson Alumni Association, where she has applied her leadership and organizational abilities to coordinate Class of '83 reunions and events. "It is important that alumni in key management positions offer their support and expertise to ensure the continued quality of Clarkson's renowned programs. It is also a way to help the school maintain its solid connection to private industry and the public sector."
Still, Georgia does not rule out changing professional direction in the future. A positive undergraduate experience, completion of her Ph.D. in operations management from Rutgers University in 1998, and a desire to pass on her knowledge and experience, underpins Georgia's ultimate goal of teaching at the university level. "Staying connected to Clarkson for the past 20 years has been invaluable, allowing me insight into the success of programs and departments from a faculty perspective," says Georgia.
Georgia and her husband, George Clayton, reside in Flemington, New Jersey.

Utilizing supplies from Maine to California, zebulonUSA.com has sourced products in the clothing (men's, women's and children's), bags and luggage, and toy categories. Future expansion is planned in the areas of home and outdoor, sports and outdoor gear, and tools. Because the search for American-made products has become almost like an exploration and discovery process, Paul said it seemed only proper to name the company after American explorer Zebulon Pike.

Juliet Hurley '97 MBA
Business is all about EverChange LLC
In the two-plus years since she founded EverChange LLC, Juliet Hurley '97 (MBA) has found an expanding market for her on-site accounting software consulting business in the Detroit, Michigan, area. With a full client schedule, she also finds herself in demand at professional functions. In September, for example, she made two presentations to the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants to present new features of QuickBooks® and Peachtree®.
Not bad for an entrepreneurial venture that began with a hunch. "I was working for a small CPA firm that complained about clients wanting QuickBooks® and Peachtree® help. Considering the numerous CPA firms in the area that probably had similar problems, I thought demand had to be large," she says. "I just leapt in and tried."
Juliet trains staff members in various areas of bookkeeping such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, and bank reconciliations. Ambitious employees enjoy expanding their skills and jobs, and companies save time and money, she says. Plus employers can better retain these quality staff members by promoting from within.
Her previous positions included being staff accountant for CPA and private entertainment firms, and controller at an electronics business. But she was interested in meeting a variety of clients and gaining exposure to multiple industries that EverChange LLC has made possible.
Juliet, who also holds two master's degrees in finance and accountancy, has high praise for Clarkson's MBA program. "The rigor of the Clarkson program and group projects caused me to learn efficient time management and people skills." She notes that of other schools she has attended, "none had strong and effective project work. The Clarkson MBA program gave me the people skills to work with a variety of personalities, backgrounds and age groups."

Ron Ayers '02
Clarkson alumnus builds social communities in cyberspace
"Internet communities that promote responsible social networking and create affinity groups offer an easy and direct way for people who share hobbies, interests and professional aspirations to meet and communicate," says Ron Ayers '02, director of advertising at the Daily Jolt Inc.
Ron speaks from both personal and professional experience. He graduated from Clarkson three years ago with a degree in management systems. As a student at Clarkson, Ron launched the Clarkson Daily Jolt in 2000. "I was contacted by the Daily Jolt the summer between my sophomore and junior years. They were in the process of trying to expand their network to more campuses and had viewed my homepage on Clarkson.edu. They sent me an e-mail asking if I was interested in running a Daily Jolt Web site at Clarkson."
The Clarkson Jolt, which is updated daily, provides interactive information on academics, events on the campus and in the community, and commentary on issues of interest to Clarkson students. Ron developed the site, and with the help of his then future wife, Amy Grieve '00, promoted it in the freshmen dorms and through stickers and contests. He also received assistance from professors who helped him promote the annual Professor Deathmatch, which has gained national attention for both Clarkson and the Daily Jolt. Classmate Richard Bellamy '03 joined him in managing the site.
Today the student-run Clarkson Daily Jolt reaches over 2,000 students everyday.
After graduation from Clarkson, Ron was hired by the Daily Jolt's main office in Boston as advertising director. He also handles advertising for three other Web sites: JoltCamps, RateMyProfessors.com, and Jolinko, a new Internet social networking initiative designed for university students and alumni which he helped develop.
According to Ron, cyber communities and sophisticated social networks like the Daily Jolt and Jolinko evolved from personal Web pages and blogs.
As a teenager, Ron had his own Web page called "Ron's Donut of the Week" which gained some national exposure in Internet Underground Magazine as one of its "Top 10 Weird Sites of the Year" and a mention in Entertainment Weekly magazine.
"Basically I reviewed donuts," Ron explains. "I was also very involved in bulletin board systems, which you dialed into locally through a modem. Bulletin board systems had up to 20 phone lines and you could leave messages, download files, and play games. It was not very sophisticated technology then, but it was still fun."
Now, according to Ron, for students looking to network with other students or meet alumni who share their passion for obscure rock bands or ice sculpting, finding new friends is only a click away.
Ron stays connected with Clarkson through the Clarkson Jolt and Jolinko. "I chat with alumni and current students through it and I can keep up with what's going on around campus. These sites are evolving into communications centers for the Clarkson community. I am proud of the role I have played in creating them."
