Clarkson alumnus Robert Fanch '69 and his wife, Suzanne, have transformed a former dude ranch at the foot of the Continental Divide into an environmentally friendly, world-class resort. Their successful efforts to develop and operate an eco-friendly, luxury resort were recognized recently with an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Students Win EPA Grant for Research into Fuels
Four Clarkson science and engineering students have received a $10,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to study biodiesel as an alternative to petroleum diesel in school buses during the 2005-06 school year. The students' proposal "Biodiesel as a Sustainable Alternative to Petroleum Diesel in School Buses" was a winner of the EPA's P3 Award Program.

2005 Research and Education Conference of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors
In July the Clarkson Center for the Environment co-sponsored the 2005 Research and Education Conference of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). The four-day conference brought some 250 of the world's preeminent science and environmental engineering scholar-educators and graduate students to Clarkson for interactive workshops, oral and poster presentations, and networking opportunities.

Two Receive Clarkson Honorary Degrees
At the AEESP conference, Clarkson University awarded honorary doctor of science degrees to Charles O'Melia and Richard Luthy. In honoring the two honorary degree recipients, Clarkson President Tony Collins spoke of their enormous contributions to their fields of research as well as their professional and personal connections to Clarkson.

Alumni Weekend 2005
Hundreds of alumni, staff, faculty, current students, and new and old friends got together for Clarkson's annual reunion.

50 Years of Residence Life

Entrepreneur and inventor Eric Cylvick '88 (EE) has taken a backyard toy and turned it into a screaming thrill ride that propels riders to speeds up to 55 mph. Eric created ZipRider™, an extreme zip line cable ride that is, according to an article published earlier this year in The New York Times, "causing a sensation" at resorts and parks.

Kirsten E. Griffiths '03 (Cm) is only in her third year of a five-year doctoral program in chemistry at the University of California at Los Angeles. But already the promising young scientist has distinguished herself by accumulating an impressive list of awards and professional recognitions. This past summer, Kirsten added another honor to her resume when she was one of only 50 doctoral students in the country selected to attend Germany's elite annual Lindau meeting. It was, she says, "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
