Alumni

Tim LaLonde '78One of the perks of this position is the opportunity to regularly return to Potsdam and witness the ongoing enhancements to Clarkson in both our academic programs and the physical additions to the campus. Over the past few months I've had the added opportunity of viewing the University through the eyes of a parent whose oldest child is now a freshman at Clarkson. I'm happy to report that this experience has only strengthened my longstanding belief that our alma mater continues to offer a valuable, unique educational experience in a great setting that is second to none.

To see first hand the Clarkson of today (and our alumni of tomorrow) consider the following opportunities:

  • Put Clarkson on the visit list for your prospective college student.
  • Represent your company at one of our on-campus Career Fairs held with our many corporate business partners throughout the academic year.
  • Share your experiences with our students in the classroom in your particular professional field. Contact the Alumni Office to coordinate a visit with our professors.
  • Don't forget the men's and women's hockey schedule as well as our many competitive Division III sports teams. Let's go Tech!

Competition for new Clarkson students has increased markedly due to many factors including declining demographics in many of our historical markets. The University is addressing this on many fronts including the recent launch of our "Defy Convention" campaign that will spark interest through image advertising in several areas where there are many alumni. There are many ways to assist the University with these initiatives key to Clarkson's future financial stability. Your Clarkson spirit can be one of our greatest recruiting tools. Please contact the Alumni Office to see how you can help our admission efforts in your area.

On October 14, 2005, we dedicated an on-campus memorial to the four Clarkson alumni that lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Please remember the families of Mark Rasweiler '70, Richard O'Connor '75, Paul Hughes '85, and Peter Klein '87 in your thoughts and prayers.

As always, my personal thanks to the many alumni volunteers who provide the leadership of your Association and coordinate the events at our 13 regional chapters and many other locations throughout the United States.

Yours in the Clarkson spirit,
Tim LaLonde '78

Alumni can volunteer through ACE Mentor Program
Clarkson University has formed a partnership with the ACE Mentor program to introduce high school students to career opportunities in technical fields.

ACE, which stands for Architecture, Construction and Engineering, includes 17 firms that provide volunteers to work as mentors. Several mentors from a company adopt a group of 20 or 30 students for the school year. The mentor-student teams organize like real-life design and construction firms and work on design projects.

With this partnership, Clarkson alumni have the opportunity to volunteer as mentors. ACE Mentor programs in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Boston and Albany currently need mentors. As a mentor volunteer, you would work directly with students to introduce them to the profession. In addition, you may be able to assist students on college scholarship and enrollment opportunities.

For information on how you can participate, e-mail or call Steve Newkofsky at Clarkson (steve.newkofsky@clarkson.edu or 315-268-6467). For more information on the mentor program, visit www.acementor.org.

Off to the Races … Again!
This year's Day At The Races was once again a sold-out event. Two- hundred alumni, guests and friends gathered at the Saratoga Race Track on Friday, August 5, to enjoy the Second Annual Day at the Races. Clarkson sponsored one of the day's races and members of the group were able to present the trophy to the winning horse's owner. This event attracted alums of all ages and backgrounds, making it a truly diverse gathering.

World Yacht Brunch Cruise
More than 50 New York City area alums gathered together on the World Yacht for brunch on June 12. The two-and-a-half hour cruise took alums, family and friends around sites on the Hudson River. Ellis Island , Chelsea Piers, the Statue of Liberty, and Battery Park City were among the sites that were viewed by event participants.

Chicago Baseball and Brunch
In August President Tony Collins and his wife, Karen, took a two-day trip to the windy city. They joined alums at Ann Sather's Restaurant for brunch and a White Sox game at US Cellular Field.

North Country Dinner Cruise
The North Country Chapter of the Alumni Association gathered together on August 23 for a dinner cruise with President Tony Collins and Karen Collins along the St. Lawrence River. Alums were able to enjoy a gourmet meal and a breathtaking sunset. The night also included the presentation of the Stub Baker '27 Chapter Service Citation. The Stub Baker '27 Service Citation is awarded to an alum who has shown exemplary service and leadership to the North Country chapter. This year's recipient was Bob Burns '59. As the party boat returned to the dock, Ron Frazer '45 exclaimed, "I can't believe we've never done this before!"

Come to Reunion and honor Egon Matijević
Egon Matijević, Victor K. LaMer Professor of Colloid & Surface Science, is known throughout the world for his significant contributions to the field of colloid science. At Clarkson, we also know him as a trusted colleague and a remarkable teacher who has affected the lives of several generations of Clarkson students. In fact, he has taught more than half of all Clarkson undergraduates.

Next summer, Alumni Reunion 2006 will mark the beginning of Dr. Matijević's 50th anniversary at Clarkson. He is a remarkable human being, scientist and teacher. Look for more information in the spring.
